Журнал «Психиатрия» основан в 2002 году по инициативе академика РАН А.С. Тиганова. С 2008 года журнал входит в «Перечень рецензируемых  научных журналов». С 2012 года журнал «Психиатрия» включен в систему РИНЦ. С 2020 года журнал включен в Scopus.

В журнале «Психиатрия» публикуются научные и информационные материалы в соответствии с основными направлениями журнала. В задачи журнала входит  распространение актуальной информации о последних научных разработках и достижениях клинической психиатрии, фундаментальных исследований в области нейронаук. Большое внимание уделяется современным методам диагностики, лекарственной терапии психических нарушений, другим видам терапевтического вмешательства и реабилитации пациентов разного возраста (детского, подросткового, юношеского, зрелого и позднего возраста). Трансляция результатов научных исследований в медицинскую практику представляет образовательную ценность для врачей, научных работников и организаторов здравоохранения.

Редакционная коллегия принимает на рассмотрение оригинальные статьи и систематические обзоры, имеющие значение для психиатрической науки и клинической практики. Приоритет отдается рандомизированным контролируемым исследованиям, систематическим анализам, метаанализам и крупным когортным исследованиям с научно-доказательной базой. Ценность представляют сообщения практических врачей о полезном опыте выявления и лечения психических нарушений.

Журнал предназначен для широкого круга читателей – врачей, научных работников, студентов вузов и ФУВ, организаторов здравоохранения РФ, стран СНГ и зарубежья. Доступность для международной аудитории обеспечивается англоязычной версией названия статьи и аннотации и размещением метаданных статьи (публикуемого материала) и пристатейного списка литературы на сайте журнала (указать адрес).

Члены редакционного совета и редакционной коллегии представляют ведущие научно-образовательные центры России и других стран. В состав редколлегии входят академики РАН, профессора, доктора и кандидаты наук. Среди авторов журнала специалисты из столичных и региональных научных и практических учреждений Российской Федерации, стран СНГ и ближнего зарубежья,  а также иностранные авторы.

Настоящая публикация представляет собой расширенный обзор и анализ основных докладов ведущих экспертов в области биполярного аффективного расстройства (БАР), представленных на XVI Всемирном конгрессе по психиатрии (14-18 сентября 2014 г., Мадрид, Испания) и 27-м Конгрессе Европейской коллегии нейропсихофармакологии (18-21 октября 2014 г., Берлин, Германия) и посвященных двум важным аспектам диагностики БАР на современном этапе: 1) персонифицированной медицине (Sophia Frangou, Eduard Vieta, Thomas Schulze) и 2) концепции стадий заболевания (Flavio Kapczinski, Jan Scott, Fiametta Cosci).
